Home Decoration Tips for 2016

As we edge closer to the end of 2015 (Christmas decorations will be out soon!) many people are considering their goals for next year. If you’re thinking about moving house, redecorating or buying your first home, you may be considering just how you would decorate it once you move in.

Here are some home decoration tips for 2016:

Think about your taste and style

Maybe you want your home to have a theme, or you just know you want it to be cozy and comfortable. Or maybe you have no idea what you want, and you’re worried that you have no taste. This is incredibly common, and you’d be surprised how many people are hesitant to let their true style show through in case they’re judged by friends and family. Remember this is your home, so you can decorate it any way you want.

Take the time to watch home decorating shows on TV. Subscribe to magazines which feature decorating tips and tricks, and make a list of the things you like. Often we’re more certain about the things we don’t like, and that’s fine-make a list of them as well. Once you’re finished you should have some guidelines and be able to explain in a few sentences how you want your house to look.

DIY

DIY is a great opportunity to let your personality loose on your house, and you may find yourself with a fun new hobby. Whether you want to sew pillow covers, create lampshades, or paint a feature wall, now’s the time to give it a go. DIY has never been so popular, and if you head to yard sales you’ll find plenty of things which can be repurposed. The internet is also full of decorating and DIY blogs and sites like Pinterest where you can learn lots of new DIY tips.

Buy your furniture

If you have some furniture which is moving with you, consider how it will look in the new house. Will it go with the walls and curtains? You may want to think about selling old furniture and taking the opportunity to buy pieces which will really shine. Look for modern furniture which will give your house a luxurious feel, and consider statement pieces like a classic dining table with modern dining chairs.

Create a Budget

No one wants to feel that sick pit in their stomach when they realise they’ve gone a little crazy with the home decoration and now can’t afford to pay the bills. That’s why it’s important to set a realistic budget. You may want to break it down into rooms or sections of the house so you know exactly how much you have to spend and won’t need to worry about going over.

Enjoy the process

Home decoration can be a little stressful, but you should also be able to enjoy the process. Invite friends and family to go shopping with you, and plan a party for when you’re all moved in and settled.
