How Can I Make More Storage in My Bedroom?

Creating more storage in your bedroom requires clever use of available space and thinking creatively about organisation.

For instance, can you add storage containers under your bed or get a new bed with an ottoman base? Can vertical storage be added with floating shelves or tall bookcases to take advantage of wall real estate?

You can use hanging organisers in your wardrobe to fold items neatly and over-door storage pockets for all your shoes and accessories.

These are but a few solutions – read on for more.

Ottoman bed

The best way to create extra storage in the bedroom is to consider an ottoman bed.

Ottoman beds use the whole underside of the mattress for storage, with the mattress lifting into the air on powerful hydraulic struts.

The beauty of ottomans is their reconfigurability—you can get end—and side-lift versions and full—and half-opening ones which are suitable for low ceilings for example a loft space?

A few things to consider:

  • Storage height: Ottomans offer between 20-35cm of storage depth. Deeper ottomans are best for storage, but the beds are higher.
  • Wood or upholstered, no metal: Most ottomans are upholstered, but some are wooden, and none are metal.

A bed with drawers

Are you not a fan of lifting an ottoman base? Then a bed with drawers is a worthy alternative. These have less storage space than ottomans, but some people prefer them for keeping things organized, with a drawer for different things.

The number of drawers depends on the bed size:

  • Single beds: One or two drawers.
  • Double beds: Two to four drawers.
  • King and super-king sizes: Up to six drawers.

The depth of the drawers is crucial. If you have carpet, ensure the drawers are on runners (not wheels) so they open smoothly.

TV bed

If you want a TV in your bedroom but lack the wall or desk space, a TV bed puts one in the footboard and stores it out of sight when not in use.

These beds protect your TV from dust and some models have built-in surround sound and soundbars to enhance your experience.

Over-door storage

Over-door storage solutions include dressing gown hangers, storage pockets, mesh organizers, and racks and pantries. Mesh organizers and pantries are fantastic for beauty products, while pockets are great for shoes.

Your door has a clearance behind it, so always measure the depth of the over-door storage you are buying and make sure your door will open ok.

Tired shelving

Books, games, collectibles, and other bits and bobs can live on shelves, freeing up space on desks and tabletops.

Measure your wall and get the widest floating shelves. You can store lots of stuff and work upwards to add more space.

Wooden shelves are perfect for heavy items, but for smaller things, transparent acrylic ones significantly reduce visual clutter.

A wardrobe with drawers

Need more drawers? Look at your wardrobe!

Your wardrobe can be as tall as your ceiling, allowing you to upgrade it with one, two, or three drawers for all your stuff.

The fantastic thing is that you can then get rid of other bulky furniture in your bedroom—such as an old chest of drawers—and free up floor space.

Tall wardrobes are also great for stick-on mirrors, or you can get a wardrobe with a mirrored sliding door to prevent any clearance problems.

Have a massive clear-out

Even if you add storage to your bedroom, you still need to make good use of it, which means letting go of the things that collect dust.

We’re talking old trainers, clothes, photo frames, game consoles, and anything else that isn’t useful. And all those sentimental items? Just store them in a box somewhere.
