Your bedroom is the one room in your house that’s your haven. The living room is for the family and visitors, the bathroom and kitchen are practical rooms with a specific function, but your bedroom is where you can relax and, ideally, sleep at night.

So, it makes sense that your bedroom is the room that most reflects your personality. Here are a few tips to help you design something you’ll really love.

Bedroom Conventions

Typically, your bedroom should be restful. But that doesn’t mean it’s boring. You don’t need to shy away from colors that you like or a lot of decorations.

The most important thing is that you have a comfortable bed and a way to control the light and temperature in your room. People sleep best in a cool, dark environment. Other than that, you can play around with different design ideas.

If you use your bedroom as an office or study room as well, consider getting a room divider so you don’t get distracted while trying to sleep or trying to work. This encourages better sleep hygiene

Unique Features

If you want your bedroom to be a reflection of you, look for unique decorative features that you fall in love with. Thrift stores and antique places are a great place to go so you can find different ornaments or furniture pieces that speak to your personality.

The easiest way to add a unique touch to your room is with wall art. While original paintings are truly unique and beautiful, they can be expensive. Another option is to find prints, either of paintings or of other artwork that someone’s created.

Consider other decorative features as well, like ornaments, photo frames for pictures that mean something to you, and so on.

Your Bed

One of the first things you’ll see as you walk into your bedroom is your bed. It’s the point of the bedroom, and it can be a great decorative feature as well as a place to sleep.

First, consider your bed frame. You want a frame that’s practical and stylish. It should be sturdy and comfortable, and it should match your design ideas, whether you prefer simple and understated or glam and flashy.

You should also get bed linen that suits your style. Get a few sets that you like, so you can swap and change.

Children’s Rooms

From a fairly young age, you can allow your kids to have a say in how they decorate their rooms. While you will need to help them, give them the ability to make their own choices. This allows them to develop their own sense of style and creativity.

You should also think about updating your child’s room as they get older. No teenager wants to sleep in a room they designed years ago. Their tastes will change, and their room should change with them.

Again, as they get older, they can also be more independent in how they redecorate.
