Easy And Affordable Option: How To Choose The Best Flooring For Your Garage
Garage flooring isn’t something that people usually think about. However, it really can add some finishing touches to your home. While having carpet installed isn’t really an option, since garages are where vehicles, tools, and yard equipment live, you do have some choices. You’re no longer limited to the standard concrete floors that came with your home.
Painted Coatings
Latex or oil-based paints are best for garages. Both will stand up to oil drips and other things that leak from your vehicles and home equipment. The process of applying these paints is easy – just use thin, even coats and keep an eye on low areas in the concrete where the paint might begin to pool. You won’t be able to drive or even walk on the concrete until the paint is dry, so make sure that you do this during a time of the year when you can move all of your garage’s contents outside. You’ll also need to add in a clear coat in order to protect the paint once you’re done.
Epoxy Paint
Epoxy paints are even tougher than latex or oil paints. They contain epoxy, which is a type of very strong glue. They’re designed to hold up no matter what you or your garage’s content throw at them. Before you apply the epoxy paint to your concrete, follow the instructions and prep the surface accordingly. Otherwise, the paint won’t adhere properly, and you’ll end up having to apply some additional coats.
Concrete Stain
A concrete stain is usually applied immediately after the concrete has been poured and cured. Some are even added to the concrete itself in order to make it turn a different color. However, there are stains that can be applied to the surface afterward. If you want your concrete to have a pattern or a different color, then this is a valid option. Many concrete stains are simple to use, making them great for people who want to do it themselves.
Concrete Sealants
Concrete sealants provide a protective coating, as well as some color. You can choose a sealant that’s the same shade as your concrete, or go in a different direction entirely. It’s completely up to you. However, keep in mind that the sealant is permanent, so you’ll be stuck with it and can’t change your mind once it’s applied. Whilst not quite a sealant and more of a coating finish, you could also consider a Polyaspartic layer for your Garage Flooring, not only is this extremely durable but it’s also customisable in more ways than traditional sealant, the big difference being that this layer can be patterned instead of a solid colour. The other great benefit with this kind of finish is that it’s very low maintenance and stain resistant, so it’s perfect for a garage with a lot of work going on inside.
Coverings
Of course, you could always cover your garage’s concrete floor. This is where having a carpet installed comes in. While you don’t want to go with indoor carpeting, as it would end up getting destroyed when you drove your car on it, outdoor carpeting will work well. You also shouldn’t have it permanently installed, as the concrete needs to be able to expand and contract with the weather or else it will crack. Instead, just have the outdoor carpeting laid over the surface. Gluing is another option, although it isn’t recommended, due to its permanence. You’ll end up wearing out the carpeting before the concrete.
